The barn, the Hay Cathedral, where the forage from the permanent meadows, rich in hundreds of species such as grasses, legumes, and medicinal herbs, is stored. It is the true aromatic heart of Parmigiano Reggiano Pratichiera!
🌾 Alex and the Scent of Seasoned Fields
That morning, Alex woke to a different smell, not just of cooked milk, but of a flowering meadow. The scent came from the large farm barn, where the mixed hay, cut from Fontevivo's permanent and alfalfa meadows, was stored.
"Mom Marta," asked Alex, "why is hay so important?"
"Because, my little one," Mom explained, "only that hay, full of different herbs, gives the milk those magical lactic bacteria. It's the flavor of our land!"
The Entrance to the Aromatic Labyrinth
The barn was a vast, dark place, filled with gigantic bales of hay stacked to the ceiling. Alex had to reach the center, where the aroma was strongest, a true concentration of nature.
Alex slipped through a small hole in the wall. He found himself in a maze of yellow and green walls.
And Kicca the squinty-eyed? She was already there. Kicca had realized that hay was Alex's weak spot: it was difficult to walk on. She had climbed to the top of a pile of bales and was dozing, feigning indifference.
Alex began climbing the wall of hay bales, using the dry fibers as handholds. The scent of alfalfa, clover, and fennel was intoxicating, but the hay stung.
Kicca, at the top, opened her half-closed eye. She had the advantage of height.
The Hay Landslide
Kicca began to scrape the bale she was lying on with her nails, intentionally pushing down a small landslide of dry hay.
Sssssshhh... A deluge of straws fell on Alex. The little mouse was hit, but the landslide created a natural, protected tunnel between two bales, which carried him straight to the center!
"Meow! I gave him a shortcut!" Kicca complained.
Alex, wiping his nose, sniffed the air in the tunnel. That was where the mixed hay was most aromatic. "Thanks for the cover, Kicca!"
The Surprise Assault
Kicca decided to abandon passive tactics. With a bold leap, she launched herself from her pile, landing with a muffled thud on the nearby pile, right above Alex's tunnel.
The cat began searching for the exit hole in Alex's tunnel, digging frantically with her claws. Scratch! Scratch!
Alex realized he had no escape, unless... he used his knowledge of hay.
Just then, Kicca's leg sank into a small hole in the bale. The hole had been left by a tool. Kicca felt trapped.
Alex, seeing the trapped paw, had a brilliant idea: he used a particularly long and sturdy piece of hay he'd found in the tunnel. He pushed it through the hay, right near Kicca's tail, and swung it.
Kicca, trapped and furious, thought it was another mouse's tail! She twisted to bite it, but the sudden movement sent her tumbling off the top of the bale!
Roll, roll, roll! Kicca, wrapped in a layer of hay, rolled down to the floor in a giant, furry, smelly ball of straw.
The Aromatherapy Finale
Alex emerged from the tunnel, jumped down, and ran toward a pile of loose hay, the most fragrant of all. He picked up a small sprig of alfalfa and chewed it slowly. It was like biting into spring. The flavor was complex, grassy, and slightly bitter.
Just as he was enjoying his aromatic snack, Grandpa Orio came in to collect the hay for the day's feeding. He used a large pitchfork to lift the hay from the floor.
Kicca, who was freeing herself from her "ball of hay," saw the pitchfork move and froze, terrified at the thought of being impaled.
Grandpa Orio lifted a large amount of hay... and accidentally, he also lifted Kicca, who was trapped between the fibers!
"Oh, look, I even got a ball of wool!" he said, shaking Kicca and dropping her into a cart full of more hay. Kicca found herself buried and, embarrassed, didn't dare move.
Alex, meanwhile, let himself slide down Grandpa Orio's leg and ran out of the barn, with the taste of the meadow steadily in his mouth.
Back home, Mamma Marta noticed: "Alex, what a strong smell! You've been in the barn!"
"Yes, Mom. And now I know that our Pratichiera Cheese isn't just cheese: it's aged Fontevivo hay!"
And Kicca the squinty-eyed? He spent the rest of the day sneezing and picking fennel seeds out of his fur, vowing that next time, he would set a trap... without using hay!
Alex, with hay in his heart, is ready for the next adventure.
